Gorillas

Human families often have their neighbors over to socialize, but do gorilla groups similarly visit with each other?
Our observations offer an emphatic “yes!” Group exchanges can sometimes be tense, but that’s not the case with the Titus and Segasira families. Past family relationships and familiarity among the members help these groups (and others) to have peaceful interactions and a little bit of fun too.
Learn how and why gorilla families get along!

Why World Gorilla Day is extra special this year:
World Gorilla Day, on Sept. 24, is one of our very favorite days! This year, we have SO MUCH to celebrate: the 40th anniversary of Dian Fossey’s book Gorillas in the Mist, the 35th anniversary of the feature film based on the book starring Sigourney Weaver as Dian and the premiere of an exclusive Discovery Channel special on the building of our new Ellen DeGeneres Campus in Rwanda. Not to mention, World Gorilla Day commemorates the founding of Dian Fossey’s groundbreaking study of the mountain gorillas in 1967.

At only 3 years old, she is at an incredibly vulnerable age, but with the support of her group, we have high hopes that Urusobe will grow up to become a successful adult.

Historic Pablo’s group faces dominance shift
We’ve seen a big shift in one of our longest-studied mountain gorilla groups in recent months. Pablo’s group, which has been studied since 1993 and was led by famous silverback Cantsbee for a record 25 years – and most recently by his son, Gicurasi – has experienced a change in dominance. Over the last few months, a younger, more-aggressive silverback named Ubwuzu has begun to take over leadership. While many of the gorillas still remain loyal to Gicurasi, we will continue to monitor their activities and allegiances to see who is ultimately chosen as the leader of this historic group. Get the inside details and the fascinating history of Pablo's group in this important update from our staff on the ground.
